The Chastity Belt has NO key!

I honestly thought this post was going to be easy to write. The participants may differ but the scenario is ALWAYS the same. Inevitably someone says, “well Ms. Joyll you’re 30-ish, you don’t have any children yet, when are you going to give your parents some more beautiful grandchildren?” UGGGGH this question makes me want to pull out all my hair & for those of you that know me you know that’s alot of bloody hair! BUT, as irritating as this question is….oh I have the response digitally recorded so as not to lose my voice by the way (my parents have been married 35 beautiful years & taught me the.importance of children coming AFTER marriage), its NOT the worst possible scenario that this comes up in. THAT….WELL……THAT…

As we all know all too well, sex comes up entirely too much in casual conversation these days. You almost cannot do anything without it being mentioned or visualized in some capacity. So on the few dates I end up on or even worse or better depending on your point of view, it ALWAYS comes up. And then of course comes, THE QUESTION.”Well do you have ANY children?” “No”, I reply.( insert SNARK from other side of phone, table, fiber, whatever) Dude is automatically thinking, wait in her 30s with NO KIDS? WHAT IN THE SAM HELL IS WRONG WITH HER!!??!!! Let’s see, she’s got a great career, she’s nice, intelligent, stunningly beautiful :-), can cook, has a great sense of humour, a sense of style, & can get along with almost anyone. So what’s the issue? Calmly presses play on digital recorder….Well my parents….35 years….NO WEDDING, NO WOMB. Any Questions? presses play…… This Is Joyll Cambridge, The Humanist Exec, Have a fantastically wonderful day!

Healthcare is even badly executed when you HAVE insurance.

Wow, where do I start? (exhales deeply) As many of you know, I’ve had my share of recent hospital stays. I would profess to say that 60% of the time they have gone.well & I have been well cared for. BUT oh boy did a recent visit to the Emergency Department here at a local hospital that’s obviously in trouble just completely rub me the wrong way.

(exhales again) Ok here goes, I took a bus late at night to get to the.hospital rather than call & ambulance even though I was delusional from pain & fever. I arrived in the ED about the time when they had just sent the entire waiting room back to the treatment area so it WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. Now this particular hospital was in dire straits which I suspected before I arrived but it REALLY was the closest place to go.1st issue, I waited almost 45 mins to be triaged & there were NO OTHER patients being triaged! The triage nurse who was actually a good egg, had been summoned back by the drs to help the other ER nurses because they were THAT shortstaffed!

Next part of my nightmare, After finally being taken to treatment area in obvious pain & with a verified fever of 102.5 as well as a 135BPM heartrate (eh more on that later) I still had to wait over an hour to see the Dr! The lab had come within the 1st 15 mins & taken my blood already! Mind you, I’m still screaming in pain & at this point having chills from such a high fever. FINALLY Dr arrives & I clearly tell him what’s going on, he claims I will be given pain medicine quickly & then scampers off to GOD KNOWS WHERE. Remember we are already into hour THREE & I have blacked out a few times already. Nearly ANOTHER HOUR later my nurse arrives with pain & nausea medicine because by this time I have begun to hurl uncontrollably. This means that FOUR hours after I arrived to an EMPTY waiting room, I am FINALLY being given medication to relieve my immediate symptoms. FOUR HOURS! HOW MANY SLAS where violated that night? And I’m talking about only in the 1st few hours. Completely unacceptable! And I am.insured, indeed with one of the best insurance companies in the country when it comes to reimbursement rates. POTUS OBAMA, you have started on the right path but healthcare reform needs to go much further. There needs to be greater accountability & more stringent service level requirements that our healthcare providers MUST be held accountable to. It is unacceptable for anyone to not be properly taken care of when they arrive in ED, BUT the excuse providers use about having to care for too many uninsured & therefore not being able to provide the best care, well I’m living proof that fowl doesn’t fly! UGGH watch your Mouth lady!!!

Hey lady, I’ve got a question for you. When you open your mouth & spew all of that negative venomous 4 lettered language do you NOT think about the people around you?

This actually came up today because over the past few weeks I have noticed other ladies including my BFF dropping F-bombs in places around children, the elderly, family, & in front of clients & customers. So today when I was talking to her on the phone she dropped one in a fit of road rage & being fed up with it I called her out on it.”You know,” she said, “you’re right, I do curse entirely too much now & need to get that under control.” In no way is she a bad person but I use her as an example that was an easily resolved situation. For so many of the other women I hear using entirely too much foul language on a daily basis however, it’s not.

I’ve been in public places recently such as hospitals, the mall, food markets, etc where I hear women dropping language so foul I want to snatch their lips clear off!! I saw a women in a hospital waiting room not too long ago who used so much foul language around infants & young children I had to go tell security & they came & escorted her off the premises. More words in the conversation were curse words than were NOT!

Ladies, do we REALLY want that to be the legacy that we leave to our children & the young girls we mentor? Do we really want to open our mouths & spew such venom that it could peel paint off the walls everytime we speak? Please, I implore you, look at your surroundings & THINK before you speak. We are appalled as parents & mentors & make the joke that kids will say th darndest things or they repeat everything they hear, or we are visibly upset when we find out from the teacher or seeing them in interaction with other children that they are using such language. We have the nerve to look around seeking where they heard such language…..guess what…..answer that question, by looking in the closest mirror. Just don’t drop an f-bomb when see who the source is Ohtay?

Why are we all so Angry?

Ok this is going to be short & sweet bc Joyll is on some medication for all mankind lol. I just want to quickly ask…Why Are We All So Angry? I log onto twitter for 5 mins & I see there’s beef between 2 hip hop “artists” and that others are initiating it & fanning it!

Seriously people, I’d venture to say that most of you would be terribly upset if something happens to either one of these gentlemen because of your constant instigation so STOP IT.

The focus of this post though is anger. In the past few weeks, we seen men kill their wives and family and themselves because their angry. We’ve seen people brutally murder their co-workers because their ANGRY. The questions are simple, why are we all so angry & what can ve done to better alleviate this anger before it boils over & we end up with all these violent & senseless deaths?

I mean, is it the economy, the state of the world, television & the media, or maybe its the hormone packed foods that many of us eat these days. We tend to be so aggressive, that often times when we hear about others & their unspeakable acts, we react with so little emotional involvement that its almost a lack thereof.

These days, it is so important to remind ourselves & each other that we are HUMAN & we should continue treating each other & living as such.

Featured Showstopper of the Day Alexander McQueen Samsonite

Many of you already know I’m somewhat of a fashionista. Don’t worry you’ll see.
If you want to see this gorgeous McQueen look here. just search Craigslist for Alexander McQueen doesn’t matter what city or state & it WILL POP up!
Anyway, I want to quickly talk about an item is mine that has garnered a tremendous amount of attention lately. It’s the work of art known as the Alexander McQueen Samsonite Alligator Pullman. I actually own THREE of these beautiful creatures. I bought them late last year after seeing them featured in a charity fashion show. They TURN HEADS. It’s true fashion meets function. They’re hardside, have the Samsonite spinning wheels for easy maneuvering, and the interiors are also gorgeous. As I said I have THREE of them 2 of which I’ve used a bit & the other I have not. Ping me if you are interested.

The Holiday zoneout…..Avoid the NOZONE

Hahaha ok so I feel like I’m honestly the only person working today! The holiday zone out is bad for labour day because the last big holiday was the 4th of July! This brings up a very important issue though. I call it the NOZONE. As in No way is that employee paying attention to his work. As in no way is that person focused on this conversation. As in no way, did he just say that!?!?!?! Now, how do we avoid the the unproductiveness & crude nature of the NOZONE? Spend some time with your employees WEEKLY to talk about issues, suggestions for new ideas, & goals. Simply ASK your friends, family, people in casual conversation to put the smartphone down for a second while you talk to them about something. Maybe you’re actually talking too much? Ask them what THEY’D like to talk about. I’ve found that this me-ness in the younger generations has spread like the plague to older generations as well. People think we don’t care anymore because we often act like we don’t. Prove someone wrong today. Happy Labour Day!

TODAYS GADGET OF THE DAY PHILIPS FIDELIO FOR YOU IPAD

OK I have to admit I’m enthralled with iPad accessories. GOOD QUALITY iPad accessories. I scour the internet for them daily in hopes that I’ll find the next big thing or next MUST have/can’t live without item. My nickname is Gidgets Gadgets ( thanks to my Brother Derrick for that lol) & people have come to depend on me for the latest info on gadget gear. With that in mind I present you with Todays gadget of the day the PHILIPS Fidelio iPad dock. What captivated me about this wonderful device is even though it accommodates your iPad, iPhone, or ipod touch, it doesn’t even HAVE to because it has a Bluetooth connection for streaming! Meaning you could potentially be sitting across the room writing or some other sort of activity on your iPad or iPhone (angry birds anyone) & be streaming some Prince from the Purple Rain album from clear across the room. Honestly, how cool is that!?!? Oh & did I mention the whole charging of the iPad, iPhone etc as well? no pricing or other details yet but I will keep you posted on this nice little #. Thanks & Happy Friday!

The quirkyness of family….

Sigh… family…..Woah….family. Having grown up in European society I think I have a different definition of family than most. IMO family should support you as best they can & when they don’t agree with your decisions they should simply step back in support but silent dissension. If the choices you make are good ones well, then they are good. The opposite, well hopefully whatever lesson you needed to learn from the situation you carry with you throughout life.

All of our families have their own quirks. Their way of communicating, or not. Their way of actual interaction or not. Their way of providing support or not. And sadly their way of coping with tragedy or not. If a family’s infrastructure is strong than it can face any adversity & conquer it & take those lessons learned forward with them. Sadly the American family structure is so irrevocably broken that most do not handle these types of situations well & anger & venom spew forth until the family unit collapses or nearly so. The question is, how do we repair the broken American Family? This is actually going to be an on-going series & I don’t want to be the only one involved in the discussion. So weigh in & give me some suggestions, because as we all know too well, it’s impossible for one person so have all the answers.

Suggestions?

How NOT to screw up new employee onboarding.

Funny how things have a way of coming back around full circle? What… nevermind. Anyway what I need to talk about in this post is relevant on so many levels right now especially for small business because they seem to be doing the most hiring right now, since larger corporations are inappropriately using their stimulus money to shore up their own companies instead of create jobs as President Obama & congress requested. ( oh I’ve said far too much)

ONBOARDING of a new employee is simply the carefully executed introduction & therefore indoctrination of a new employee into your company’s structure.

Simple right? Eh not so much. But instead of discussing what companies do wrong, I thought I’d actually be helpful & tell you how to do it RIGHT. This will help you avoid turnovers AND help you to decide if the decision you thought was a good one, might not be so.

The key to successful onboarding is easily in the PLANNING, something most companies especially ones of smaller size without a lot of HR personnel do not do. Who’s conducting the training? Are all the human resources components addressed such as compensation, health benefits, perks, etc? Who is going to be the onboarding liaison that the new employee can go to if they have a question? Do you have a contigency plan in case new employee is not able to start when you had hoped? (this happens more than we realize) I recommend daily no more than 15 minute meetings with the employee & the onboarding specialist to assess not only how things are going but to solicit honesty & correct any issues that need to be addressed. These should happen daily for the 1st 7 days & then weekly for 1st 6 weeks.

Another thing coming in that I believe is absolutely essential to successful onboarding is the interview of the incoming. I honestly cannot stress how important this is because it gives both employer & employee a forum to discuss anything that may have come up since the acceptance letter was signed & all paperwork filled out AND it gives the employee a sense of value coming in that they may not otherwise feel. There are 3 essential questions that should be asked during this interview that I believe provide valuable insight & create a 2-way dialogue between both parties. The 1st, what would you like to see happen in your 1st 30 days here, is self explanatory. The next, do you have any questions that I can immediately answer for you or find the one who can? Why is this important, well this interview is about welcoming your new employee. This question shows that not only do you appreciate them making the decision to accept your offer but that you want to try & make them feel as well received as possible. The 3rd question is the trickiest because many may be afraid to answer but you have already created an inviting & open setting in which to dialogue so the employee should feel comfortable answering it. “Now that you’ve had a chance to digest coming on board, you’ve researched our company, seen our work environment, & way of doing business, anything you’d suggest we change/update?” Now as the employer, I know what you’re thinking. WHY ON EARTH SHOULD I ASK THAT SO SOON? Simply put, today’s new employee is much better educated, much more informed, & well seasoned by the time they join your company. Why would you NOT want to take immediate advantage of all that potentially wonderful talent?
